Interview with Major Events Gold Coast CEO Jan McCormick on 4BC Weekend Breakfast Show

4BC Radio Brisbane

Interview But let's get on to what we're here for today. We're in the air next leading into the Gold Coast Air Show. We're going to talk about what is going on down there. I'm very excited that the Gold Coast has announced the Pacific Air Show is set to fly in August. And it is, I think, possibly the first time I've seen an air show being marketed in Australia in at least a decade, if not longer. Who loves aerobatics out there? Who loves planes doing real loop de loops? The guys in the studio here with me today had not even seen anything other than River Fire in the last decade. They just don't even know what it's like to see these gorgeous blue planes flipping up through the sky, chasing each other around in squalls and coming back. You know, that's what an air show is. And the show that's coming from the US is coming from the US It's an air show on steroids, hardcore aerobatic events that we just dream about, seeing hundreds of thousands of people travel to this event from all over the country. In America, it's held in Huntington Beach and there's Carnival shows and music festivals and things that go on all around it. And it's coming to the Gold Coast. We've got Jan McCormick, the CEO of Major Events Queensland, here to talk to us about it today. Jan, I'm excited. Can you tell us about this event? Oh, thanks. More than the introduction. It is truly exactly as you said, I was lucky enough to go to Huntington Beach and see it in October and believe me, it is going to blow people's minds. Oh, I'm excited. It's just so extraordinary. It's 5 hours, non-stop aerobatics in different countries represented. It's just amazing. It truly is amazing and it's fully entertaining. And I sat on a beach for three days and saw the same show for three days in a row, and I could have had more. It was wonderful. Oh, and there's a whole generation of Australians that have not seen an airshow, and I'm not even sure why they stopped. But, you know, let's not get into the negative. Let's stay with the wonder of its coming back. When is it on? Tell us what we can expect Well, it's on in August 19 to 21 and we can expect wonderful acrobatics over Surfers Paradise Beach. The planes will be flying from Coolangatta to perform over Surfers Paradise and around. There'll be a flotilla the other side of the flight envelope where people with boats will be parked The real excitement with this event for me was when you actually sat on the beach in the ticketed areas. They had commentary about what was going on and who was flying and why the planes were made. And then they added It was great music and some of the music actually was Phil Collins music, and it was just extraordinary. It was all curated and it's narrated and it's so, so exciting and so different from anything that's been in Australia. Oh, bless you for bringing this to town. How did it come about? I started on it in 2019 and it took myself and Kevin Elliott from Code for approximately two years to get it across the line. We had to, obviously, as you can imagine, get a lot of support from the federal government the state government, local council, of course, and they were wonderful counsellors really stepped up the Gold Coast, city councils really stepped up. So we had a lot of processes we had to do, we had to get the Defence departments involved and so on. And it took us two years, but it was two years of what I believe is going to be the best investment this city has ever made. And this will be within the three or five years, I believe, the biggest event in Australia. Oh, I can't wait. And people will go down and stay there for a day for a couple of days. Absolutely. They're going to be having all sorts of things that be happening around the festival. The event of the airshow, and there'll be music and there'll be all sorts of things going on. It'll be it's just such a buzz. It's such a buzz. Do you expect the tickets to sell fast? Well, I had a call from Kevin Elliott on, I think it was Wednesday, the day they launched the tickets. And he said in three and a half hours, they sold more tickets to this airshow than they would sell to their Huntington Beach one in 24 hours. I told my husband about it last night. He said, let's get tickets right now. Look, let's get tickets right. I'd be encouraging if you've got a lot of mates and you're really into this sort of thing and you want to have a great time, there's general admittance admission tickets, which is great. You can take the family, put a brolly up, sit on the beach and watch the show, but you're not in front of those speakers and you're not hearing the story. But if you get a group of friends together and get either a cabana or a chalet, I think holds 20 people and just have it for one day. I would for one day have that experience. And then if you want to stay and this is what happened apparently in Huntington Beach, people come for one day, then they go home like you and go to all your mates. You've got to come and see this thing. Let's go down again tomorrow and don't sit on the beach for free sort of sounds. It sounds phenomenal and like a multi-generational family opportunity as well, where you can get the grandparents and the kids and get on down there. It was, you know, the 2 million people that turned up last year. I walked the beach a few times. Mind you, it was a really long stretch of beach and there was just families having parties. And yeah, it was wonderful to see. It really is. It's a family event and it's also very exciting, high adrenaline. So those are all supreme athletes for people who want to get some tickets. It's called the Pacific Airshow and you can look that up online. Jann McCormack from Major Events Queensland, thank you very much for joining us today.

ABC Gold Coast Breakfast Show

91.7 ABC Gold Coast

Let me turn locally and some good news, in fact, because we want to see the big events on this in this city doing well, don't we? We've got a brand new one this year called the Pacific Air Show. I'm sure you've heard of it. We haven't done it before. It's a huge coup in many regards that the Gold Coast has secured what's usually held in along the, you know, some of the most famous beaches in the United States. But this air show will be here in August. Surfers Paradise will be somewhat transformed for it. And it looks like ticket sales are doing really well. You'll hear from Kevin Elliott. He's he says that the initial ticket sales are already more than double what he would normally see, in fact, for the American shows. If that's any indication as to, you know, how things will end with this event, I'm very encouraged and think it will ultimately become one of the, if not the largest event in Queensland and certainly hopefully the largest air show in Australia's history. Wow, that's really aiming for it, isn't it? But they say the ticket sales are really doing well. Normally of course, he's involved with the Huntington Beach event in California, which is huge. Ours won't be as big to start with as theirs, but they're really buoyed by the ticket sales. And we know that it's a funny world, isn't it, in terms of what people are buying tickets for, what they do, buy things for early, what they don't, which artists get support and which don't. You know, one person has a sell out show and another person has to cancel. It doesn't seem to be a great deal of rhyme or reason to any of it at the moment, but there you go. Tickets at the moment. First, early sales suggesting that this air show event, Pacific Air Show along Surfer's Paradise in August is already a favourite with some. So I wonder if you've grabbed your tickets. Is it something that you're keen to cheque out? If so, you'll be supporting something that they're trying to make a big event, not just for the Gold Coast but for Queensland and Australia as well.

Interview with Kevin Elliott - CEO Code Four

Mornings - ABC Radio Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is about to become home to literally one of the biggest shows it's ever seen. Certainly recently, the Pacific Air Show Gold Coast will be launched in a few minutes time. It's an event that's been three years in the planning. It's supported by all levels of government, and it's set to be the biggest event on the gold Coast in years, probably since ninety days back then, ideally timed off the back of the pandemic to stimulate domestic and international tourism. That's the hope, anyway. It'll be here for a few years, too. There's already a few dates locked in the diary for upcoming years as well, but what's it all about the Pacific Air Show? Well, that's why we have Kevin Elliott on the phone. He's here from California to launch his baby. Really, he's the CEO of Code for Leading Creative Marketing Company. But moreover, the engine so described behind the inaugural Pacific Air show Gold Coast and it's good to have you on the phone. Kevin, good morning. Yeah, good morning, Matt. Thanks so much for having me on. We're excited. I bet you are. I bet you are. But this is something new for us on the Gold Coast, so I'm going to need you to explain what it's all about. Well, I'm absolutely happy to do that so I can give you a little background. The event started in 2016 Huntington Beach, California, and has quickly become the largest air show in the United States by attendance. It's a major overwater air show we attract millions of people to come down and watch the event, as well as thousands of boats. It's quite a spectacle, and our vision has been to project that excitement and energy to one of our closest allies across the Pacific Ocean here at the Gold Coast of Australia, and the event will be landing in August of 2020

Channel 7 Local News- interviews with Matt Hall, Mayor Tom Tate and Kevin Elliott- CEO Code Four

Channel 7 Gold Coast

It's set to be a spectacle of the sky that's already generating plenty of buz. The announcement that the world's biggest airshow will come to the coast has locals intrigued and tourists planning a trip down under a brand new event that's got the mayor in a spin. A couple of loops later, I'm going, Oh, my equilibrium is gone, but that's code for I'm going to be sick. After a roaring announcement yesterday, excitement is building for the Pacific Air show amongst locals just brings another dimension. More people, different interests and obviously a lot of money as well. I'll be the first one to buy a ticket pilot's. So to have this air show coming to the Gold Coast, which really is the world's best beach for having this show for how long and straight it is. I'm super excited. The last show in California generated 105 million dollars. It's predicted we'll see the same result revitalising business in the glitter strip and booking out hotels. We're excited. There's a lot of excitement, even in the United States, people are saying I'm booking my accommodations the second that we know when the event's going to be. I think there will be 100 per cent full because just in the US alone in the media, there's 42 point seven million reach a reach our city will grasp as we continue to bounce back. It will be held in August 2023 and exact date will be announced later this year.

10 News First- Airshow Coup

10 News

The world's biggest air show is coming down under. The Gold Coast has locked in a 15 year deal to host the event from 2023 with expectations it will inject tens of millions of dollars into a COVID crippled tourism economy. If the slick announcement clip is any indicator, it's the largest maritime event on Australia's eastern seaboard. No biggie. It's going to be quite a show. Welcome to Australia's playground You're going to sit on the beach with your family and you're going to have non-stop action. When one aeroplane leaves, another one comes in. So it's going to be absolutely incredible and totally different than anything you may be thinking of. The deal has been about three years in the making and enough time for Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate to make the promo tape. It's just that combination that will get your adrenaline going. It's called Pacific Air Show Gold Coast and is a direct copy of an event performed in the US for four of the past five years. We're becoming the only air show in the entire world to have two editions one in Huntington Beach, California, and one in Gold Coast, Queensland. and it will be with us for a minimum of 15 years. So we're incredibly excited and proud that we've been able to pull this across the line, everything under the Sun and we're just getting started The first show in the skies over Surfers Paradise will be on the weekend of August 20th next year and Tom Tate's already drumming up and economy reviving tourist avalanche. Don't just do a weekend, stay longer because it's fun crack. American, Canadian and British air aerobatic teams are already locked in while the Aussie top guns are still to be confirmed. Still to be determined what aircraft? But you can expect a great selection of aircraft from our fighter attack aircraft, our military air transporters, our air refuelling aircraft, and if the promo is anything to go by, it'll have everyone flying high

Interview with Kevin Elliott- CEO Code Four

Today Show Channel 9

Well, Kevin Elliott is the man behind, or I'd like to say the plane brain behind the Pacific Air show that is coming to our shores next year. My new best friend, Kevin. Good morning. Great to have you on today. Oh my goodness, we're a year out, over a year out from this event. August 2023. It is going to be huge. It's going to be the biggest event the Gold Coast has ever seen. Yeah, we're really excited. Coming all the way from Huntington Beach, California, bringing it right here to the Goldie as we can see from these pictures, this is what you can expect. Racing along that huge stretch of sand on the Gold Coast Huntington Beach, it is the most awarded air show in the United States and it is coming across the Pacific here. It is going to be absolutely huge no matter where you are on the beach, on the Gold Coast, there's room for everyone here. That's the beautiful thing about it, right? Being an overwater air show right here on the beautiful beach. You have kilometres and kilometres of straight wide beach. So we're going to have a view for everybody, even from the buildings, anywhere. You're not going to have a bad seat in the House. That is a really good point because there is plenty of time to book accommodation, lots of accommodation. You basically can have an apartment at Aisleyne with some of these aircraft as they come. You can wave at the pilots as they go by the kids. You don't have to wrangle crowds if you don't want to do that. But my goodness me, from an economic perspective, this could not come at a better time for us here in Australia. So thank you so much because there will be jobs, there will be tourism here on the Gold Coast. Wonderful? Absolutely. Yeah, we're really focussed on making it good for the community. We want to stimulate jobs accommodation. Our experience in Huntington Beach, California, is it's been a huge driver of economic benefit about $106 million in 2019 just to our city, which is a third the size of the Gold Coast. So it should be huge, Don. All right. Well, we will see you in twenty twenty three.
